The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has two openings for Water Station A Operator, in Lansing, MI, as part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO, Local Union 352.

Position Summary

  • Safely operates Dye Water Conditioning plant, Wise Road Water Conditioning plant, Dye Pumping Station, Cedar Pumping Station, filter press and remote facilities/equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Operates Dye Water Conditioning Plant
  • Monitors equipment, takes samples, takes chemical feeders in and out of service, uses hand tools to make repairs and adjustments, and responds correctly to emergency conditions.
  • Changes ammonia cylinders.
  • Knocks down lime.
  • Pneumatically unloads chemicals.
  • Occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
  • Operates Wise Road Conditioning plant, Dye Pumping station, Hulett Road and other satellite systems remotely and locally by monitoring telemetry data.
  • Coordinates with on-call operator as necessary.
  • Operates Wise Road Water Conditioning plant.
  • Takes samples, takes basins in and out of service, unloads chemicals, and monitors chemical feeds.
  • Learns and correctly uses laboratory procedures including portable equipment and analyzers.
  • Operates filter press/thickeners including plate washing, bag changing, and truck unloading.
  • Operates emergency generators and backup pumping equipment at all facilities.
  • Must be proficient in operating computer equipment including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and control systems within BWL policies.
  • Troubleshoots equipment, writes up work orders and performs lockout-tagout procedures correctly.
  • Keeps work areas and plants clean.
  • Responsible for plant security after normal working hours and on weekends and holidays.
  • Assists maintenance and/or additional cleaning duties when functioning as an extra operator.
  • Required to serve on-call duty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or necessitated by job responsibilities.
  • Required to follow BWL safety manual rules and wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Attends all training for safety awareness and skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.

Job Specifications

  • Must be qualified in Water Station Operator pool.
  • Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must complete training program and obtain Michigan Department of Environmental Quality F-4 certification.
  • Must understand plant piping and plumbing.
  • Previous water treatment experience preferred.
  • Must pass fork-lift training to be licensed to operate fork truck within six months of start date.
  • Must be able to work shifts including weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  • Considerable standing and walking on concrete and grating.
  • Must climb ladders and stairs.
  • Frequently lifts/carries up to 50 pounds from floor to shoulder.
  • Good vision required for inspection of operating conditions and color perception required.
  • Must be able to communicate via telephone, radio, and e-mail.
  • Must work in confined spaces.
  • Must be respirator certified and be able to wear Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) respirator.
  • Works indoors and outdoors in all temperature and humidity ranges.
  • Dust and noise levels can be high at times.
  • Possible exposure to water treatment chemicals.
